Background: ENGLAND, GIVING A DISAPPOINTING BATTLING DISPLAY, WERE ALL OUT FOR 182 AGAINST AUSTRALIA WHEN THE FIFTH TEST BEGAN TODAY (THURSDAY) AT THE OVAL, LONDON.

THE AUSTRALIANS HAD REPLIED WITH 3 RUNS BEFORE BAD LIGHT STOPPED PLAY SHORTLY BEFORE SIX P.M.

PRIME MINISTER SIR ALEC DOUGLAS HOME, WHO HAD INTERRUPTED HIS SCOTTISH HOLIDAY TO DEAL WITH THE CYPRUS PROBLEM, WAS THERE TO SEE PART OF THE AFTERNOON'S PLAY. ON A CHILLY, CLOUDY DAY, HE WAS AMONG THE TWENTY-FIVE-THOUSAND WHO TURNED UP, OBVIOUSLY NOT DETERRED BY THE BOREDOM OF THE FOURTH TEST.

AUSTRALIA BOWLED WELL WITH PACEMAN NEIL HAWKE, WHO FINISHED WITH SIX FOR 47 FROM 25.4 OVERS, IN OUTSTANDING FORM.

BUT EVEN SO IT WAS A FEEBLE EFFORT BY THE ENGLAND BATSMEN. THE FIRST FIVE MEN IN THE ORDER ALL REACHED 20 YET NONE OF THEM WENT ON TO FIFTY.

KEN BARRINGTON, WITH 47 MADE IN 124 MINUTES, WAS TOP SCORER. BEFORE BEING EIGHTH OUT. GEOFF BOYCOTT (30) AND BOB BARBER (24) BEGAN WITH A FIRST WICKET STAND OF 44 IN 50 MINUTES BUT IN OVERCAST WEATHER THE REST OF THE BATSMEN WERE ALWAYS STRUGGLING.

ENGLAND'S RESISTANCE WAS FINISHED WHEN TED DEXTER (23), COLIN COWDREV (20), PETER PARFITT (3) AND JIM PARKS (10) LOST THEIR WICKETS AFTER LUNCH WHILE 59 RUNS WERE ADDED.
