    M. Jacques Foccart, Secretary-General to the French Presidency in charge of African and Malagasy Affairs?

  • Description

    M. Jacques Foccart, Secretary-General to the French Presidency in charge of African and Malagasy Affairs arrived in Nouakchott on Tuesday (April 7) for a three-day visit to Mauritania.

    M. Foccart brought Mauritanian President Moktar Ould Daddah a verbal message of goodwill from President Georges Pompidou, and said that relations between the two countries were excellent, though minor problems remained to be solved. This message helped to dispel rumours that France was retreating from her African sphere of influence, and M. Foccart emphasised this when he presented his message.

The French expert on African affairs arrived with his wife from Dakar, where they attended last weekend's celebrations to mark the 10th anniversary of Senegal's independence from France. The Foccarts were met at Nouakchott Airport by M. Mohammed Ali Cherif, Secretary-General to the Mauritanian Presidency, French Ambassador Adrien Dufour, and the Governor of Nouakchott district.

On Wednesday M. and Mme. Foccart toured tapestry factories where they watched the tapestries being woven, and paid a visit to the Nouakchott Wharf where they were guided by the Director of the Wharf.

Before leaving for Paris on Thursday M. Foccart made a statement in answer to a question about the possible renewal of links between France and Guinea. He said that France always wishes to maintain the best relations with all countries, especially African ones, and consequently any move in that direction would be very favourably considered by the government of France and by French public opinion as a whole.
