    AT THE TRIAL, THE PROSECUTION ALLEGED THAT THE ACCUSED MEN WERE PART OF A GANG SAID TO BE LED BY CONGOLESE NATIONAL ARMY MAJOR TSHIMANGA WHO WAS ALLEGED TO HAVE ESCAPED FROM THE MINES POLICE WITH TEN ACCOMPLICES.

    THE CONVICTED MEN RECEIVED SENTENCES RANGING FROM TWO TO 20 YEARS' IN PRISON.

    IN DELIVERING THE JUDGEMENT, THE COURT STRONGLY EMPHASISED THE GRATE DAMAGED DONE BY DIAMOND SMUGGLERS TO THE CONGO'S NATIONAL ECONOMY.
