Soccer...and France beat Luxembourg three-nil on Sunday (25 February) in their Group Five match of the European championship. Poor teamwork and finishing prevented the French team from winning a dull match in Paris by a greater margin.
SYNOPSIS: France, in the dark shirts, kick off and their first move was a sample of many frustrations to come. They had a chance for an early goal when one of their forwards was brought down just outside the penalty area.
The free kick is wasted, but the French are further thwarted when a good shot on the run hits the crossbar.
Luxembourg reserves were on edge but this time, a French shot hit an upright and the Luxembourg goalkeeper was quick to smother the rebound.
At last, the French scored. Winger Albert emon floated across a corner kick, which Jean Petit back-headed nimbly into the net. Despite this goal, French supporters booed their team as they went off for halftime.
Early in the second half, the French looked a little tidier. A pass is fed to Emon on the wing. He glides inside a defender and strikes a brilliant swerving shot into the top left-hand corner... a goal worthy of a better match.
Luxembourg made occasional forays into attack but their work up forward was even less effective than their opponents'.
Luxembourg's cause was hopeless when France scored their third goal. It came, at the second bite, from a free kick. First, the French captain, Marius Tresor, headed against the bar, but substitute Jean Francois Larois volleyed neatly. France lead their group, with five points from three matches.
