King Hussein of Jordan and his wife, Queen Alia, flew to Canada on Tuesday (6th August) amid a tight ring of security. The royal couple were welcomed by Canadian officials and diplomats at Ottawa airport.
The visit is the first King Hussein has made to Canada. He will be guest of honour at the Abbotsford International Air Show near Vancouver on Thursday (8th August). King Hussein is a keen flyer and the air show is the official reason for his visit.
On Wednesday (7th August), King Hussein planned to meet the Canadian Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau and the External Affairs Minister, Mitchell Sharp. Their talks are expected to centre on the Middle East situation as well as bilateral issues.
The Jordanian Premier Mr. Zeid Al Rifai, who is also Jordan's Foreign Minister, is to join King Hussein in Canadian on Thursday (8th August). Mr. Rifai is currently in Washington where he has been meeting the US Secretary of State, Dr. Kissinger. Their meetings are part of a series between Dr. Kissinger and Middle East leaders to work out an interim Middle East agreement as a prelude to a more lasting settlement.
