  • Description

Mike Todd and his wife Elizabeth Taylor had to stay over in Paris for twenty four hours while they waited for clearance on their flight through the iron curtain to Moscow.

Out on the apron at Orly Airport stood the Todd's private airplane, a Lockheed Lodestar, which they hoped to use on their flight to Moscow. It was not permissible, however, and the couple finally left their hotel in Paris - the Hotel Meurisse, rue de Rivoli - to board the regular Air France flight to Prague.

Our cameraman tried to take a peep into the Lockheed Lodestar. It was locked and he had to be content with pictures from the outside looking in.

There are real butterflies on the windows, a built-in dressing room, coffee bar, cocktail bar, ice-box for champagne, and a telephone linked to every part of the world. The number is N.300 E. Ring up any time you like and you will probably hear Mike Todd's voice.......all these things are aboard this fabulous aircraft. The door of the aircraft bears the legend, in huge orange and black letters, "THE LIZ" - which would have been spotted by the Kremlin observers long before it ever got there, had it been allowed to make the flight.

Inside, it is like walking into the lounge of a luxury hotel. A heavy-pile wine-coloured carpet stretches the length of the fuselage; six cosy seats, rearward facing, of bright coral material. In the saloon most things were stamped LIZ. Even the decks of playing cards by every seat. In the visitors' book is the inscription: "Liz makes Toddville a better place to live in."
