  • Description

THE FIERY CROSS OF THE KU-KLUX-KLAN BURNED AGAIN THE GEORGIA MOONLIGHT ON SATURDAY NIGHT. IT MARKED THE KLAN'S NATIONAL RALLY HELD IN THE SHADOW OF THE CONFEDERATE MONUMENT ON STONE MOUNTAIN, 12 MILES FROM ATLANTA, IN AMERICA'S DEEP SOUTH.

IT WAS THEIR ANSWER TO LAST WEEK'S MARCH ON WASHINGTON BY 200,000 NEGROES AND WHITES. THE RALLY WAS SMALLER THAN PREVIOUS YEARS AND OBSERVERS REPORTED CROWD REACTION TO SPEECHES AS "NOT VERY STRONG."
THERE WERE ABOUT 80 ROBED KLANSMEN AND AN ESTIMATED 2,000 SPECTATORS. SPEAKERS DENOUNCED "COMMUNISM, SOCIALISM AND NIGGERISM". WHILE THE 30-FOOT HIGH CROSS BURNED ITSELF OUT, THE KLANSMEN MARCHED AROUND IT EXECUTING LEFT-HANDED HITLER-STYLED SALUTES.

THE STATE OF GEORGIA REFUSED PERMISSION TO THE KLAN TO MEET ON STATE-OWNED PROPERTY. IT TOOK PLACE ON A FIELD OWNED JAMES VENABLE, AN ALABAMA LAWYER. HE TOLD THE AUDIENCE: "THE KLAN IS THE GREATEST ORGANISATION ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH. IT IS THE BULWARK OF THE CAUCASIAN RACE -- THE WHITE RACE."
