June 9, the final day of his three-day State visit to Greece. United Arab Republic President Nasser - accompanied by Madame Nasser - attended a review of Greek forces at Tatoi base, near Athens. King Paul and Queen Frederika of Greece were also present.
This is the first occasion on which President Nasser has reviewed troops of a NATO country, and some observers see the event as significant. After Greece, President Nasser visits Yugoslavia, and it is thought he will try to form a UAR-Greece-Yugoslavia bloc. It has been pointed out that Yugoslavia's Marhal Tito is scheduled to meet Greek Premier Karamanlis later this month.
Even if the bloc does not materialise, President Nasser's visit to Greece will not have been without use. The future of Turkey after the recent coup, the position of Egypt's large resident Greek community, and contacts between Cypriot President-elect Archbishop Makarios and Israel, are all topics of joint UAR-Greek interest.
