  • Description

SOME 900 VETERANS OF THE IRISH EASTER RISING OF 1916 WATCHED A HUGE PARADE THROUGH DUBLIN TODAY (SUNDAY) - PART OF THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS OF THE RISING. PRESIDENT EAMON DE VALERA, NOW AGED EIGHTY-THREE, REVIEWED THE PARADE AND LATER LAID A WREATH AT KILMAINHAM GAOL WHERE 14 IRISH LEADERS WERE EXECUTED AFTER THEY HAD SURRENDERED.

ALTOGETHER 5,000 IRISH TROOPS AND MEN FROM CIVILIAN ORGANISATIONS MARCHED THROUGH DUBLIN STREETS BATHED IN SPRING SUNSHINE AND ABLAZE WITH THE COLOURS OF FLAGS, FLOWERS AND DECORATIONS. CROWDS WERE THICKEST IN O'CONNELL STREET OPPOSITE THE GENERAL POST OFFICE THAT WAS THE REBEL HEADQUARTERS IN 1916. FROM A PLATFORM OUTSIDE THE GPO THE 900 FRAIL SURVIVORS OF THE RISING WATCHED THE PARADE. THEY STOOD BEHIND PRESIDENT BE VALERA AS HE RECEIVED THE MILITARY VEHICLES AND MARCHING MEN.

ON THIS SPOT FIFTY YEARS AGO, PADRAIC HENRY PEARSE, COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE IRISH REPUBLICAN BROTHERHOOD READ OUT A DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. A SHORT TIME BEFORE HE AND 70 REBELS HAD TAKEN OVER THE POST OFFICE AND HOISTED A TRICOLOUR FLAG. TODAY THOUSANDS AT THE CEREMONY HEARD THE WORDS OF PEARSE'S DECLARATION OVER LOUDSPEAKERS. THE ONLY GUNFIRE THEY HEARD WAS A 21-GUN SALUTE AS THE IRISH GREEN, WHITE AND ORANGE FLAG WAS HOISTED. IN THE CROWD WERE 10,000 IRISH EXILES FROM EUROPE AND NORTH AMERICA.

MEMORIES WERE STRONG FOR PRESIDENT DE VALERA AT KILMAINHAM GAOL. HE HIMSELF WAS SENTENCE TO DEATH, THEN WON A REPRIEVE BECAUSE OF HIS AMERICAN BIRTH. IN SIX DAYS OF BITTER FIGHTING DURING THE RISING, 450 IRISH PATRIOTS DIED AND 2,614 WERE WOUNDED. ONE HUNDRED AND THREE BRITISH ARMY PERSONNEL WERE KILLED AND 357 WOUNDED.
