Background: A river dredger of Congo-Kinshasa was launched at Hemixem, Belgium recently. The twin-screwed craft is destined to keep the important navigable passages of the Congo River open to commercial river boats:
Madame Fitti, the wife of the Congo-Kinshasa Charge d'Affaires in Belgium performed the launching ceremony, which was attended by three Belgium ministers. The boat was named the "Banana"
The dredger is about 250 feet long (81 meters) and can operate in water only 15 feet (5 metres) deep.
After a six month commissioning period that d edger will go into service operating out of the ports of Boma, Matadi and Ango-Ango.
The "Banana" will be followed by a second dredger being built at the Belgium yards.
