    KOREANS - LAYMEN AND LAYWOMEN AS WELL AS CLERGY AND SISTERS FROM KOREAN CONVENTS - WERE PROMINENT AMONG THE CONGREGATION.

    TWO BISHOPS WERE AMONG THE 10 FRENCH MISSIONARIES MARTYRED IN KOREA. THEY WERE MONSIGNOR SIMONE BERNEUX, APOSTOLIC VICAR OF KOREA AT THE TIME, AND MONSIGNOR ANTOINE DAVLUY, HIS ASSISTANT.

    AT THE CONCLUSIONS OF THE CEREMONY, THE POPE, ADDRESSING THE CROWD FROM A VATICAN BALCONY, SPOKE ABOUT THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BEATIFICATION.

    BEATIFICATION IS OFTEN THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS CANONISATION AS A SAINT OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH.
