  • Description

During a colourful, yet solemn ceremony, Sept 15, Canada's first French speaking governor-general, 71-year-old Major-general George P. Vanier, was inducted into office in the Ottawa Senate Chambers.

Supreme court judges, members of the diplomatic corps, senior civil servants and ranking service officers and their wives filled the senate gallery.

In his address to General Vanier -- Prime Minister Diefenbaker praised him for his long and distinguished career in the service of Canada.

General Vanier in turn paid a glowing tribute to Mr Vincent Massey, retiring governor-general-and first Canadian-born representative of the crown in Canada. Mr Massey served for seven years. His term was extended several times by the government. General Vanier prayed for help to fulfil his sacred mission with all humility.
