  • Description

The Turkish occupation army in Cyprus re-named the seafront promenade of Kyrenia "Ataturk Square" on Monday (9 September), watched by about 600 Greek Cypriot civilians detained in a nearby hotel.

At a ceremony preceded by a military parade, the Commander of the Turkish Army in Cyprus, Lieutenant-General Benettin Demirel, unveiled a bronze bust of Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey.

The Turkish-Cypriot leader, Mr. Raul Denktash, attended the ceremony, but did not take any official role.

Kyrenia, formerly a centre of foreign tourism, was deserted except for its Turkish residents -- some of whom watched the ceremony -- and the Greeks who have been held in the Dome Hotel since late July.

The picturesque Kyrenia harbour front is now empty and its restaurants abandoned. But the Turkish Cypriots plan to re-open them when the post-war situation is calm.

the re-naming of the kyrenia promenade was a sign of Turkish determination to hold on to the occupied northern half of Cyprus.
