  • Description

More than 50-thousand people were in Budapest on Friday (4 April) for a parade to mark the 30th anniversary of the end of World War Two for Hungary.

To mark the occasion the Government announced an amnesty for certain categories of criminals and for illegal emigrants. People who fled the country will be able to return unpublished until the end of next year, and many prisoners will have their sentences cut. The amnesty will apply only to first offenders and prisoners who committed political crimes or acts of violence will be excluded.

The parade was highlighted by a display of the latest missile launchers. Hungary has increased its armaments nine-fold since the early 1960's and this was evident during the parade.

Members of the armed forces, communist groups and students took part.
