    FIFTY-SEVEN VETERAN AND VINTAGE CARS WILL BE SOLD TOMORROW (23 OCTOBER) AT SOTHEBY'S, THE FAMOUR LONDON AUCTION HOUSE. THEY RANGE FROM AN 1898 BEESTON "QUAD" TO A 1939 ROLLS ROYCE PHANTOM 111.

    ONE OF THE MOST FLAMBOYANT CARS IN THE SALE IS A 1928 MERCEDES-BENZ TWO-SEATER SPORTS CABRIOLET. ONLY 155 OF THEM WERE PRODUCED AND IN 1928 A SLIGHTLY LARGER VERSION REACHED A TOP SPEED OF 110 MPH. (177 KMS).

    ANOTHER EYE-CATCHER IS A 10 PASSENGER DAIMLER BUILT IN THE PERIOD 1915-23 FOR THE MAHARAJAH OF SURGUJA. THE CARRIAGE-LANTERN TYPE SIDE LAMPS ARE OF SILVER. IN ADDITION TO THE WINDOWS THERE ARE WOODEN SHUTTERS SEALING OFF THE REAR COMPARTMENT TO CONFORM WITH THE RULES OF PURDAH.

    ONE OF THE "CLASSICS" IN THE SALE IS A 1930 BUGATTI SPORTSMAN'S COUPE WHICH CARRIES A LARGE PONY-SKIN TRUNK AT THE REAR AND HAS NATURAL HIDE UPHOLSTERY THROUGHOUT. THERE IS ALSO A 1932 ROLLS ROYCE PHANTOM 11 WHICH INCLUDES A BUILT-IN BAR AND A BEAVER LAMB CARPET IN THE REAR COMPARTMENT.
