  • Description

For the first time two British rowing eights have taken part in an historic boat race on the Nile. Crews from Cambridge and Oxford competed against rowers representing the Egyptian police and Cairo university at Luxor on Wednesday (16 December).

Boat racing on the Nile at Luxor has been a tradition for nearly three thousand years. Following tradition, the rowers carried their oars aloft from the temple of Amon, led by musicians. Oxford and Cambridge took part in the eights events, part of a water festival.

In the swift current, Oxford had an early lead, but their traditional British rivals, Cambridge quickly closed the gap and went over the line a length ahead. The Egyptian police eight finished a narrow third behind Oxford with the Cairo University crew fourth.

The Cambridge victory was not popular with the Egyptian crowd, and the crew were unable to follow the custom of carrying their boat back to the temple of Amon.
