  • Description

International horse-racing on the frozen St. Moritz Lake Jan. 29. E. Schneider, of Switzerland, on Emanville d'Elle won the Cresta Run Prize for the 1600-metre trotting race against 11 competitors.

The 2400-metre hurdles was won by Erwin Kienast of Austria riding Triptowald II. There were 12 entries in this race for the Graubuenden Prize.

This annual event entails long weeks of preparation. The Swiss guardians of the lake little trust Nature in freezing it. Once frozen, the surface of the race course area is "groomed" - like the competing horses - to be in perfect condition for the day of the race.

By adding water and snow, new layers of ice can be added to the surface to give it the right flexibility needed to bear the poundings of the horses' hooves. The Swiss have a word for frozen St. Moritz lake: on race day they call it the "White Turf".
