  • Description

BURMA'S NEW YEAR FESTIVAL, TRADITIONALLY CELEBRATED ABOUT MID-APRIL, IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE WATER FESTIVAL. CELEBRATIONS LAST FIVE DAYS.

IN THE CENTRAL CITY AREA OF RANGOON, THE CAPITAL, BURMESE GIRLS PERFORM THE FESTIVAL DANCE IN FRONT OF THE SULE PAGODA WHILE THOUSANDS OF REVELLERS LOOK ON. THROUGHOUT THE CITY EVERYONE TAKES PART IN THE WATER-THROWING, THE CHIEF SYMBOL OF BURMA'S NEW YEAR.

AT EACH THROWING POINT, NEW YEAR CELEBRATORS ARE DOUSED WITH WATER BUCKETS AND A BIG RESERVE SUPPLY OF WATER SARRELS. THE BURMESE THROW WATER ON FRIENDS AND STRANGERS ALIKE. IN THE HEAT OF BURMA'S SUMMER, IT IS NO DISMCOMFORT, AND EVEN WESTERNERS JOIN IN.

YOUNG MEN PASSING IN CARS AND TRUCKS TEASE THE GIRLS TO HAVE MORE WATER THROWN ON THEM. ONCE THE WATER FESTIVAL WAS GENTLE AND RESTRAINED CUSTOM. TODAY, WATER SPRINKLING IS CELEBRATED WITH SUCH ENTHUSIASM THAT EVEN FIRE HOSES ARE USED.
