  • Description

THERE WAS A SMALL SIT-DOWN DEMONSTRATION IN LONDON TONIGHT (FRIDAY) WHEN PRIME MINISTER HAROLD WILSON UNVEILED A STATUE OF MAHATMA GANDHI, THE FATHER OF INDIAN INDEPENDENCE. A HANDFULL OF YOUTHS SQUATTED AMID FLOWERBEDS AND BOOED AS MR. WILSON PAID TRIBUTE TO THE INDIAN LEADER WHO WAS ASSASSINATED IN DELHI IN 1948.

THE DEMONSTRATORS APPEARED TO HAVE MIXED CAUSES. ONE 18 YEAR-OLD, WHO DESCRIBED HIMSELF AS A PROFESSIONAL DEMONSTRATOR AND ANARCHIST, SAID THAT HE DIDN'T THINK THE STATUE WAS A TRIBUTE TO GANDHI BECAUSE THE STATUE COST GBP10,000 AND GANDHI WOULD HAVE WISHED THAT MONEY TO BE USED TO FEED THE STARVING IN INDIA. ANOTHER, BEARING A PLACARD READING "AID TO INDIA, NOT ARMS," SAID MR. WILSON SHOULD NOT HAVE UNVEILED THE STATUE BECAUSE ARMS WERE BEING SOLD TO INDIA BY BRITAIN AND GANDHI WAS A NON-VIOLENT MAN.

FREDDA BRILLIANT, WELL KNOWN FOR HER PORTRAIT BUSTS, EXECUTED THE STATUE WHICH WAS PAID FOR BY A MEMORIAL FUND SET UP BY GANDHI'S ADMIRERS.

IN HIS SPEECH, MR. WILSON RECALLED THAT GANDHI FIRST VISITED BRITAIN 80 YEARS AGO AS A 19 YEAR-OLD LAW STUDENT. IT WAS IN LONDON, HE SAID, THAT GANDHI GAINED THE FOUNDATION OF HIS PHILOSOPHY OF NON-VIOLENCE WHICH HE LATER DEVELOPED AND PRACTISED.
