A SHOCK PUBLIC OPINION POLL PUBLISHED IN PARIS TODAY (TUESDAY) GAVE FRANCE'S INTERIM HEAD OF STATE, M. ALAIN POHER, THE FAVOURITE'S CHANCE OF WINNING NEXT MONTH'S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS. THE POLL, PUBLISHED BY THE FRENCH PUBLIC OPINION INSTITUTE SHOWED THAT 56 PER CENT OF THOSE QUESTIONED WOULD VOTE FOR M. POHER.

THE POLL CAME AS A MAJOR SURPRISE BECAUSE FORMER PRIME MINISTER, M. GEORGES POMPIDOU HAD BEEN REGARDED AS THE LEADING CONTENDER IN THE PRESIDENTIAL BATTLE.

BUT M. POHER, WHO ONLY ANNOUNCED HIS CANDIDACY 24 HOURS BEFORE THE LISTS CLOSED HAS BEEN GAINING STRENGTH IN A SPECTACULAR FASHION IN THE PAST TWO WEEKS.

THE 60-YEAR-OLD SENATOR WAS VIRTUALLY UNKNOWN IN WORLD POLITICS UNTIL HE STEPPED IN AS INTERIM PRESIDENT OF FRANCE. WHEN HE ANNOUNCED HE WOULD BE STANDING FOR ELECTION HE ALSO REAFFIRMED HE WOULD CONTINUE IN OFFICE AS INTERIM PRESIDENT.

THE OFFICIAL PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN IS DUE TO OPEN ON FRIDAY, FOR THE FIRST ROUND OF THE ELECTION ON JUNE FIRST.

THE COMMUNIST PARTY CANDIDATE IS M. JACQUES DUCLOS, WHO LATE TODAY ADDRESSED A MASS RALLY OUTSIDE THE TOWN HALL IN THE PARIS SUBURB OF MONTREUIL.
