Background: Thousands of pilgrims from all over Greece and the Greek orthodox world on Tinos Island in the Aegean on Friday (15 August) for the service and litany of the Holy Icon of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

The date is a nation-wide holiday, regarded as the biggest religious event of the year.

The annual pilgrimage began when the Icon was reportedly discovered in a grotto hundreds of years ago on the tiny island which is part of the Cyclades group.

The discovery followed an old woman's dream. The Icon is said to have strange healing powers which is why every year thousands of people make the pilgrimage to seek help from the 900-year-old Byzantine Icon.

On Friday over 40,000 people attended the litany which was conducted by the Primate of Greece, Archbishop Serafim, leading the local clergy. The Greek Government was represented by Merchant Marine Minister, Mr. Alexandros Papadongonas.
