  • Description

Pope John 22nd used the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the American Catholic Seminary in Rome Oct 11 to give his first lengthy address in English since his election to the Papacy a year ago.

Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York, the Cardinals of Boston and Philadelphia, 60 other American archbishops and bishops and 300 other American priests were at the ceremony.

The Rector of the Seminary greeted the 78-year-old Pope, and after presentation to the cardinals, archbishops, bishops, clergy graduates and seminarists, presented him with a gold chalice to mark the centenary visit.

During the ceremony, the Pope gave his blessing in Latin. In English, at the end of his address, he gave the news that there was reason to hope for beatification of the first native American - Mother Elizabeth Seton. Her beatification as a first step to canonisation has long been an objective of American Catholicism.
