  • Description

THE TANZANIA MINISTER OF INFORMATION, MINERAL RESOURCES AND POWER, MR NSILO SWAI, YESTERDAY (MONDAY) INSPECTED PROGRESS AT THE SITE OF A GBP5-MILLION OIL REFINERY BEING BUILT NEAR DAR-ES-SALAAM.

WORK ON CLEARING THE SITE FOR THE REFINERY BEGAN LAST OCTOBER, AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE INSTALLATIONS WILL BE FINISHED IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS THE PLANT IS EXPECTED TO BE IN PRODUCTION BY AUGUST.

THE REFINERY'S CRUDE OIL CAPACITY WILL BE 600,000 TONS A YEAR. WHEN IT IS IN FULL PRODUCTION IT WILL PROVIDE WORK FOR UP TO 300 PEOPLE, AND HANDLE MORE THAN 500,000 GALLONS OF OIL EVERY DAY.

THE NEW PLANT WILL BE ABLE TO SUPPLY ALL OF TANZANIA'S NEEDS FOR SEVERAL YEARS, WITH AN EXPORTABLE SURPLUS OF ABOUT 200,000 TONS OF REFINED PRODUCTS. THIS SURPLUS COULD SUPPLY AS MUCH AS ONE THIRD OF ZAMBIA'S ESTIMATED NEEDS.

AT PRESENT A BIG AIRLIFT CARRIED OIL FROM DAR-ES-SALAAM TO LUSAKA AND NDOLA IN ZAMBIA. ZAMBIA'S OIL SUPPLIES USED TO COME THROUGH RHODESIA, BUT SINCE BRITAIN IMPOSED AN OIL EMBARGO AGAINST THE REBELLIOUS COLONY, SUPPLIES TO ZAMBIA HAVE BEEN CUT OFF.
