  • Description

Thousands of mourners attended Sunday's funeral in Damascus, of the PLO representative Ezzeddine Kalak, who was murdered in his office in Paris earlier this month (3 August). The mourners were led by the leader of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, Yasser Arafat, the Syrian Prime Minister, Mohammed Ali Al-Halabi, and other government figures.

SYNOPSIS: As the huge funeral procession moved through the streets of Damascus, many of the mourners called for revenge against Iraq. The killing of Ezzeddine Kalak is blamed on a breakway Palestinian group based in Iraq, Kalak's father led the family mourners, and the procession included many Syrian government officials, Palestinian leaders and foreign diplomats.

Kalak's body was taken to the Martyr's cemetery at the Yarmouk Refugee camp. He was killed, along with an aide, when two Arab gunmen burst into his office in Paris. A representative of Syria's President called the killers cowards who served as tools for foreigners and enemy plans.

Iraq had denied having anything to do with the killings. The French police are holding an Algerian and a Jordanian in custody.
