  • Description

In a strongly-guarded Jakarta court this week, a former Indonesian student leader went on trial charged with a attempting to overthrow President Suharto.

Hariman Siregar, aged 24, looked calm as he entered the court room on Thursday (August 1st) wearing a yellow University of Indonesia student jacket.

After the charges were read out, the Government prosecutor, Mr. T.H. Rompas, alleged that Siregar had organised student and youth demonstrations during the official visit of Japanese Prime Minister, Kakuei Tanaka, last January.

The prosecutor said his action undermined the state's political and economic stability and could eventually topple the government. He also alleged Siregar had discussed plans to replace President Suharto with other people.

Chief Judge Siburian adjourned the trial until August 12th to give Siregar time to consult with his defence counsel.

The demonstrations in January turned to widespread rioting which claimed 11 lives and resulted in the destruction of more than 1,000 cars, mostly Japanese made.

Court officials have said Siregar could be sentenced to death if found guilty under the Indonesian subversion law, Under Indonesian law, a plea may not be made during the trial.
