  • Description

TRAFFIC JAMS CAUSED CHAOS IN THE FRENCH CAPITAL TODAY WHEN PARIS METRO WORKERS WENT ON A 24-HOUR STRIKE. THEY WANT IMPROVED HOLIDAY ARRANGEMENTS, AN END TO A SPLIT-SHIFT DAILY WORK SYSTEM AND TWO CONSECUTIVE DAYS OFF EACH WEEK.

THE STRIKE - THE SECOND BY METRO WORKERS THIS MONTH - WAS CALLED BY THE COMMUNIST-LED GENERAL LABOUR CONFEDERATION AND THE FRENCH DEMOCRATIC CONFEDERATION OF LABOUR.

WITH THE CLOSING OF MOST OF THE UNDERGROUND RAILWAY NETWORK, MANY PARISIANS HOMEWARD BOUND FROM BUSINESS HAD TO FIGHT THEIR WAY ON TO BUSES. MORE CARS THAN EVER WERE ON THE ROADS, AND TRAFFIC WAS REDUCED TO CRAWLING PACE.

THE STRIKE WAS NEAR TOTAL. FEWER THAN 20 TRAINS WERE RUNNING, WHERE NORMALLY THERE ARE BETWEEN 450 AND 500. ARMY TRUCKS WERE USED TOP CARRY PEOPLE FROM THE SUBURBS INTO PARIS THIS MORNING.
