    THE RACKETEERS ARE ALLEGED TO HAVE THREATENED MOTORISTS IF THEY REFUSED TO CHANT "AWO" -- NICKNAME OF THE GAOLED OPPOSITION ACTION GROUP LEADER, CHIEF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO -- AND HAND OVER YESTERDAY, INCLUDING A GOVERNMENT PASSENGER VAN AND A GOVERNMENT CAR. THE BODY OF A MAN WAS FOUND NEARBY.

    EYEWITNESSES HAVE TOLD POLICE THAT GANGS ARMED WITH BROKEN BOTTLES AND CLUBS DEMANDED MONEY FROM MOTORISTS.

    YESTERDAY RIOT POLICE LINED THE MAIN ROAD LEADING FROM THE CITY TO DENSELY POPULATED SUBURBS AND BROKE UP ANY GROUPS OF PEOPLE GATHERING NEAR THE ROADWAY.
