  • Description

The first destroyer to be built specially for the West German Navy, the 2,850-ton "Hamburg", was handed over at a ceremony in Hamburg today. The "Hamburg" will have a 250-man crew and a top speed of 35 knots. Included in its armaments will be pursuit torpedoes and anti-submarino rockets.

The Brussels Treaty of 1954 restricted the tonnage of warships and the size for the West Germany Navy. However, she has since obtained from the Western European Union permission to increase the size of submarines from 600 to 1,000 tons and warships from 1,500 tons to 6,000 tons.
