    AUSTRALIAN PRESS TYCOON, MR RUPERT MURDOCH ENTERED THE HIGHLY COMPETITIVE LONDON DAILY NEWSPAPER MARKET TODAY (SUNDAY) WHEN THE FIRST EDITIONS OF THE SUN MORNING NEWSPAPER HIT THE STREETS. MR MURDOCH PURCHASED THE SUN FROM THE GIANT INTERNATIONAL PUBLISHING CORPORATION WHICH PUT OUT THE ORIGINAL SUN.

    THE FIRST EDITION OF THE SUN LOOKED LIKE A CROSS BETWEEN THE SYDNEY DAILY MIRROR AND THE MELBOURNE TRUTH. MR MURDOCH CHANGED THE NEW SUN TO A TABLOID FROM THE OLD SUN'S FORMAT OF A BROADSHEET. THE FIRST EDITION WHICH WENT ON SALE IN LONDON ON MONDAY MORNING WAS THICK WITH ADS AND PRETTY GIRLS. THE EARLY EDITION'S FRONT PAGE LEAD WAS AN "EXCLUSIVE" STORY ABOUT RACEHORSE OWNER ROY PETTITT WHO ADMITTED TO HAVING DOPED HIS HORSES. CARTOONIST PAUL RIGBY, WELL KNOWN TO AUSTRALIAN NEWSPAPER READERS, IS THE SUN'S CARTOONIST. MR MURDOCH'S WIFE, ANNA, WAS GIVEN THE HONOR OF STARTING THE PRESSES FOR THE SUN. EARLIER SHE WAS PRESENTED WITH FLOWERS AND GIVEN AN HONORARY "TICKET" BY THE NEWSPAPERS PRINTERS. MR MURDOCH STAYED IN THE PRESS ROOM FOR SOME TIME AND WATCHED AS THE FIRST EDITIONS OF THE NEW PAPER ROLLED OFF THE PRESSES. THE SUN'S EDITOR, LARRY LAMB, COMMENTING ON THE FIRST EDITIONS, SAID IT WAS "STILL A BIT ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES." MR MURDOCH ENTERED THE ENGLISH NEWSPAPER MARKET WHEN HE BOUGHT THE NEWS OF THE WORLD, THE MASS CIRCULATION SUNDAY NEWSPAPER.
