  • Description

At a press conference in Tunis, Jan. 16th, the nationalist "provisional Government of Algeria" (GPRA) issued a statements saying they were ready to negotiate with France on the conditions for a self determination vote in Algeria. They said they did not want such a vote to be organised by the French Army.

Conditions necessary for the vote, the statement announced, could be arranged through the United Nations, or by negotiations between "the two parties", and the nationalist Government was ready to negotiate with the French Government about the vote.

The statement said peace was possible by means of an Algerian vote under "sincere and true conditions" but it made it clear that the nationalist Government was strongly opposed to the setting up of interim executive powers in Algeria, such as were envisaged in President de Gaulle's recent referendum.
