Background: TRAFFIC WAS HELD UP IN LAGOS ON SATURDAY AS THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE THRONGED THE STREETS OF THE NIGERIAN FEDERAL CAPITAL TO WATCH WHAT IS REGARDED AS ITS RICHEST AND MOST CHERISHED TRADITIONAL EVENT - THE ADAMUORISHA (EYO) PLAY. THE EYO MASQUERADES ARE HELD OCCASIONALLY IN HONOUR OF DISTINGUISHED NIGERIANS.

SATURDAY'S MASQUERADES WERE HELD IN HONOUR OF THE LATE FASHOLA ESHINLOKUN, MOTHER OF CHIEF ONISEMO OF LAGOS. TO AVOID TRAFFIC HOLD-UPS THE PARTICIPANTS IN THE EYO PLAY WERE RESTRICTED TO AN AREA OF LAGOS OUTSIDE THE COMMERCIAL CENTRE - BUT PEOPLE THRONGING TO THE MASQUERADES BLOCKED TRAFFIC ANYWAY.

IN ADDITION, TEAMS OF POLICEMEN WERE ESPECIALLY DETAILED TO KEEP THE PEACE IN VIEW OF WHAT WAS DESCRIBED AS "PAST ATROCITIES" AT EYO MASQUERADES.
