Background: The Congo Kinshasa natioanal soccer team, the Leopards, gained a surprise 2-0 victory over Ghana's Black Stars - the Africa champions - in an exciting match in Kinshasa on April 30. This was the first time that Kinshasa had beaten the Ghanaian champions - in two previous meetings Ghana won 3-0 both times.
President Jopeph Mobuto of Congo Kinshasa and a capacity crowd of 80,000 watched the match in the Tata Raphael Stadium. The match was held at the suggestion of President Mobutu to raise funds for the benefit of the distressed areas of the Congo.
The Congolese team played an excellent game, keeping the Ghanaians constantly on their toes. Both goals were scored by the high-powered Congolese forward Kasongo, and, despite many determined attempts, the Black Stars were unable to pierce the Congo's wall of defence.
