  • Description

CARDIFF CITY, OF WALES, QUALIFIED TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY) TO MEET REAL ZARAGOSSA OF SPAIN IN THE QUARTER-FINAL OF THE EUROPEAN CUP WINNERS' CUP. AFTER A TENSE MATCH, THE WELSH TEAM DREW WITH SPORTING CLUB OF LISBON TO KNOCK THEM OUT OF THE CONTEST ON A 2-1 AGGREGATE GAINED IN THE FIRST ROUND. IN TONIGHT'S MATCH NO GOALS WERE SCORED BY EITHER SIDE.

THE GAMES BEGAN BEFORE A CROWD OF TWENTY-THREE THOUSAND. BOTH TEAMS WERE IN GOOD FORM AND DURING THE FIRST HALF THE HONOURS WERE EVENLY SHARED. SEVERAL TIMES CARDIFF LOOKED LIKE SCORING BUT LISBON'S GOALKEEPER CARVALHO DELIGHTED THE CROWD WITH SOME BRILLIANT SAVES OF CLOSE RANGE SHOTS FROM THE WELSH INSIDE-LEFT PETER KING, AND WINGER BERNARD LEWIS.

DURING THE SECOND-HALF THE GARDIFF TEAM SEEMED TO GET ON TOP, BUT STILL THERE WAS NO SCORE. MUCH OF THE LATTER PART OF THE GAME FOUND SPORTING CLUB OF MADRID PUSHED BACK ON DEFENCE. THE WELSH INTERNATIONAL WING-HALF, BARRY HOLE WAS PROMINENT IN THE THIS SPELL BUT HIS EFFORTS TO SCORE PROVED FRUITLESS.

TEMPERS BECAME FRAYED AT ONE POINT LATE IN THE GAME BUT THE PLAYERS QUICKLY SETTLED DOWN TO FINISH THE MATCH WITHOUT SCORING.
