TRANSCRIPT: CHISHOLM: "There were several marches. Dockyard workers walk from Garden Island, builder's labourers from Martin Place and storemen and blue collar workers walk from Trades Hall. As they marched the protestors had handed leaflets to motorists and pedestrians. All were peaceful. The police had redirected traffic around them."

SEQ. 3: WRAN: "This budget falls upon the infirm, and the weak and the sick and the young. Because it is the pensioners that are being given the means test, and it is the kids that will not have jobs, when Christmas comes, in their tens of thousands."

CHISHOLM: "There hundred decided to march on the Sydney Stock Exchange chanting 'let the rich pay'. At first it was peaceful, then the violence erupted.

Exchange trading had halted as protesters stormed onto the floor. Three workers were cut by flying glass as panels and doors were smashed. Noticeboards were ripped from partitions, slogans were smeared on walls. The nine men and one woman arrested face charges ranging from assault to malicious injury. Later Premier Wran..........disassociated the noon rally from the violence."

Background: In Australia, there have been many demonstrations and expressions of horror at the Federal budget announced by the Prime Minister Mr. Malcolm Fraser. The budget increased income tax, raised the price of alcohol, cigarettes and petrol, trimmed the health care system and cut government spending. Sydney saw some of the most vigorous opposition to the budget, as reporter Scott Chisholm of Channel Ten reports.
