Background: PRINCE PHILIP, THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH, NOW IN MALAYSIAN BORNEO, YESTERDAY (SUNDAY), TOURED BRITISH AND GURKHA BORDER OUTPOSTS IN SARAWAK. ONE OF THE OUTPOSTS WAS BAU, A GOLD MINING TOWN WHICH IS HEADQUARTERS OF THE 1/7 DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S OWN GURKHA RIFLES, OF WHICH HE IS COLONEL-IN-CHIEF.

THE PRICE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY MILITARY CHIEFS, INCLUDING GENERAL W.C. WALKER, DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS IN BORNEO. STRICT SECURITY PRECAUTIONS WERE TAKEN DURING THE PRINCE'S TOUR.

AFTER 20 MINUTES OF BRIEFING ON THE LATEST MILITARY SITUATION, THE PRINCE PRESENTED NINE GALLANTRY AWARDS IN A SIMPLE CEREMONY TO FIVE GURKHA OFFICERS AND FOUR NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS. THE AWARDS WERE FOR OUTSTANDING SKILL AND BRAVEY IN ACTION AGAINST INDONESIAN INFILTRATORS.

THE RECIPIENTS WERE BROUGHT TO BAU FROM HONGKONG, SINGAPORE, MALAYA AND OTHER PARTS OF SARAWAK.

ON HIS WAY TO KROKONG, ANOTHER BRITISH MILITARY OUTPOST, THE PRINCE STOPPED AT A VILLAGE TO TALK INFORMALLY WITH THE INHABITANTS.

AT THE OUTPOST, THE DUKE INSPECTED DETACHMENT OF G?E 1/7 GURKHA RIFLES AND THE 170 BATTERY ROYAL ARTILLERY. THE ARTILLERY UNIT GAVE AN ANTI-AIRCRAFT FIRING DEMONSTRATION WHICH GREATLY IMPRESSED PRINCE PHILIP.

PRIOR TO HIS VISIT TO THE BORDER AREAS, PRINCE PHILIP CALLED ON THE SARAWAK GOVERNOR, TUN ABANG HAJI OPEN. A BOAT RIDE ACROSS THE RIVER BY THE PRINCE WAS WATCHED BY A LARGE CROWD OF WELCOMES. THE GOVERNOR'S RESIDENCY THE OLD GOVERNMENT HOUSE, WAS BUILT IN 1670.
