  • Description

Electronic experts at Leeds University in the north of England have developed a television device that will help doctors in delicate heart and kidney operations. The device has been in use at the University for a week.

The new device has already helped doctors position a pace-maker in the heart of a patient and pin-point a dangerous tumour. A probe connected to a television monitor is inserted into the patient's body and an X-ray unit is placed over the operating table.

The television screen then shows three sets of pictures at once -- an X-ray picture of the patient, a record of the heart-beat and measurements picked up by the probe.

In the past doctors had to watch three different instruments simultaneously, which made operations more difficult.
