  • Description

At the World Swimming Championships, which began in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, on Saturday (September I), the young Australian team is attracting a groat deal of attention. But of the 47 countries taking part, the main battle is expected to be between Australia, East Germany, and the United States of America.

The star of the Australian team is 15-year-old Stephen Holland, who has been described as "the most exciting swimmer in the world." He has already broken the world 800 and 1,500 metra free-style records by enormous margins. He will be swimming in the 1,500 metre in Belgrade; the result should be a foregone conclusion, and only his time will be of interest.

The member of the team who does face a tough challenge is Brad Cooper. He will be swimming in the 400 metre freestyle event, and swimming against him will be the American, Rick DeMont. At the Olympic Games in Munish last year, Cooper became the Olympic Champion after DeMont, the winner, was disqualified for taking a prohibited drug which had been prescribed for his Asthma.
