  • Description

Britain's latest golfing hope, 20-year old Nick Faldo, continued his push for international success by taking an early lead in the $41,250 U.S. Lancome tournament in France.

SYNOPSIS: It can be said that the elite of golfing world take part in this tournament. This year only eight invited players are competing for the Lancome Trophy at St. Nom La Breteche near Paris.

And after the first day's play it was the young British star Nick Faldo who had established a commanding three-shot lead. Faldo put his success down to a new putter, borrowed the day before from the caddie-master.

Certainly Faldo's partner on the opening day -- American Gene Littler -- found it difficult to stay with his opponent but he hung on to finish the day in third place, four strokes behind.

In second place came Australia's Graham Marsh who seemed to have retained the form that helped him win last week's Colgate World Matchplay tournament in England. Playing Arnold Palmer of the U.S., Marsh went round in 70 -- three more strokes than Faldo. Palmer finished on 75. Marsh is also trying out a different club at present -- the new Australian Blade developed by Dunlop. It seems to be working well for the Australian who should provide competition all the way for Faldo. A victory here -- after his matchplay triumph -- would make Marsh the wold's most feared golfer on current form.

Spain's Severiano Ballesteros struggled to reproduce his usual array of skills and finished level with his opponent -- Gary Player of South Africa -- on 74.
