  • Description

A PROCESSION OF 39 GOLDEN BARGES GLIDED DOWN BANGKOK'S CHAO PHRATA RIVER LAST FRIDAY (27 OCTOBER) IN A ROYAL DISPLAY TO MARK THE END THE BUDDHIST LENT (TOD KATHIN), AND THE START OF FESTIVE CELEBRATIONS.

THE GLITTERING CEREMONY WAS REMINISCENT OF THE SPLENDOURS OF THE 18TH CENTURY SIAMESE COURT. THE ROYAL BARGE "SUPHANHONG" CARRIED KING BHOMIPHOL ADULYADEJ FROM THE GRAND PALACE TO THE TEMPLE OF DAWN.

THE OCCASION IS KNOWN AS TOD KATHIN - THE ROYAL OFFERING OF NEW YELLOW ROBES TO BUDDHIST MONKS WHO HAVE SPENT THE TIME IN MEDITATION AND PRAYER SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE LENTEN PERIOD LAST JULY.

THOUSANDS LINED THE BANKS OF THE RIVER TO PAY HOMAGE TO THE YOUNG KING. FOR THE RIVER PROCESSION, ALL THE UPPER-STOREY WINDOWS OF OVERLOOKING HOUSES REMAINED SHUT. THIS CUSTOM ORIGINATES FROM THE TRADITION THAT NO-ONE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO LOOK DOWN ON THE KING.

THE LENTEN PERIOD WAS CELEBRATED THROUGHOUT THAILAND BY BUDDHISTS, WHO COMPRISE OVER 93 PER CENT OF THE 30,000,000 POPULATION. THE BARGE CEREMONY ALSO SIGNALLED THE END OF THE RICE CULTIVATION SEASON.
