  • Description

For Filipinos suffering from loss of sight, Manila has something special co offer -- a garden especially prepared for the blind. To the sighted, the garden lacks the customary colourful floral displays. Here the emphasis is on textures and sounds.

A model of the layout--with captions in braille--gives the blind visitor an instant guide to the garden. Then, to the sound of birdsong from an aviary and of running water from fountains, the visitor is able to explore plants and sculpture by touch.

SYNOPSIS: For sightless Filipinos, the country's capital--Manila--has something special to offer. It's a garden purposely designed for the blind. A scale model--with captions in braille--gives newcomers an instant picture of the layout. But because of the specialist function of the garden, the emphasis here is not on colour, but rather on sounds and textures. The garden has been set up by the Philippine Government and is located inside Manila's Rizal Park.

Aviaries are stocked with a multitude of native birds. And the plants in the garden have been specially chosen for the variety and texture of their leaves.

The noise of running water is everywhere, with several fountains sited throughout the gardens. The whole concept was designed and created by Ildefonso Santos, the only Asian member of the American Society of Landscape Architects. He says that his main concern has been to fit the landscape to human use and enjoyment. In the turbulence of a busy capital, it makes a haven of peace for the blind.
