  • Description

IN A SPECTACULAR CEREMONY AT A FOOTBALL STADIUM IN THE AMERICAN CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, ON SATURDAY, PRESIDENT KENNEDY MET AND REVIEWED MANY OF THE CUBANS, NOW LIVING IN EXILE.

ALTOGETHER, UP TO FORTY THOUSAND CUBANS ATTENDED THE CEREMONY, INCLUDING MANY OF THE 1,113 PRISONERS WHO WERE RELEASED BY THE CUBAN GOVERNMENT LAST WEEK AFTER HAVING TAKEN PART IN THE ABORTIVE INVASION OF CUBA IN MAY 1961. THERE WERE ALSO NEARLY ONE THOUSAND RELATIVES, WHO WERE ALLOWED TO LEAVE CUBA AT THE SAME TIME
REPORTERS WHO ATTENDED THE CEREMONY DESCRIBED IT AS BEING CHARGED WITH EMOTION. THE THOUSANDS OF CUBANS GAVE ONE GREAT CHEER AS PRESIDENT AND MRS. KENNEDY ARRIVED AT THE STADIUM FROM THEIR HOLIDAY HOME AT PALM BEACH, IN FLORIDA.

DURING THE CEREMONY, PRESIDENT KENNEDY WAS PRESENTED WITH THE BATTLE STANDARD CARRIED BY THE CUBAN INVADERS, NOW KNOWN AS "BRIGADE 2506". IN ACCEPTING THE FLAG, PRESIDENT KENNEDY EXPRESSED HIS APPRECIATION:
THE PRESIDENT SPENT HALF AN HOUR SHAKING HANDS WITH MEN WHO TOOK PART IN THE INVASION OF CUBA. THE MEN WORE AMERICAN MILITARY ISSUE TROUSERS AND SHIRT, BUT THEY DID NOT CARRY ARMS.

HOWEVER, PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S APPEARANCE AT THE CUBAN RALLY WAS BITTERLY CRITICISED ON SUNDAY, BY HAVAVA RADIO, WHICH SAID THAT THE PROCEEDINGS INDICATED THAT PRESIDENT KENNEDY STILL PERSISTED IN HIS AGGRESSIVE POLICY TOWARDS CUBA "IN OPEN VIOLATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS CHARTER."
