  • Description

Preparations are going on in the centre of Baghdad to celebrate the first anniversary of the Revolution of July 14 1958, when the Hashemite Monarchy was overthrown and King Feisal slain.
In the main square of Baghdad a huge triumphal arch - the Liberty Monument - is being erected. Soldiers help in the construction work to enable it to be ready in time for the celebrations. A memorial to the Iraqi Unknown Soldier is also being built.
Meanwhile, near the palace itself, there still lies the silent evidence of the events that brought General Kassem to power. Some bath??? lie on the spot where the King was killed; his wrecked burnt-out car stands in the courtyard.
Bullet and mortar-shell holes mark the house of King Feisal's Premier, Nuri-es-Said who was killed attempting to escape the mob disguised as a woman.
