  • Description

A Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLC) spokesman in Beirut, Lebanon on Friday (12 September) said the Egyptian authorities closure of the PLO radio station in Cairo on Thursday (11 September) was no surprise. The spokesman, Mr. Majed Abu-Sharar, said the PLO were expecting such an action because " certain secret items in the Egyptian-Israeli interim peace agreement required Egypt to stop its propaganda campaign against Israel."
Mr. Abu-Sharar said closing down the 'Voice of Palestine' radio was a great loss to the Palestine revolution because through it his organisation used to contact its people in "the occupied territories."
PLO staff also used the station to send coded instructions and "uncover United States policy for the Egyptian people." But, Mr. Abu-Sharar said, the Palestinian Revolution was used to such hardships and would certainly be able to overcome this one. The PLO was ready for the Egyptian move and he expected a new PLO radio station to be operating shortly.

Egyptian authorities are believed to have taken over the radio station because of continuous Palestinian opposition to the Sinai peace agreement and the broadcasting of false news. An Egyptian spokesman said a recent 'Voice of Palestine' claim that President Sadat had escaped an assassination attempt near Alexandria was "pure trash, unworthy of comment.
