Background: French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing arrived in the Moroccan capital, Rabat, on Saturday (3 May) for a three-day official visit to an enthusiastic welcome.
This was the first visit by a French Head of State to Morocco since the protectorate was abolished 19 year ago.
King Hassan was at the airport to meet President Giscard d'Estaing and his wife. After the formal welcome, the two Heads of State drove through crowed streets to the Royal Guest Palace, where the French President was due to stay.
The 14-kilometre (9-mile) route from the airport to the Palace was lined with thousands of cheering Moroccans, including tribesmen on horseback.
