    CLARKE WAS TAKING PART IN AN INTERNATIONAL "OLYMPIC DAY" ATHLETICS MEETING AT THE MOMMSEN STADIUM IN WEST BERLIN, AND HAD DECLARED HIS INTENTION, BEFORE THE RACE, OF ATTACKING THE FRENCHMAN'S RECORD.

    SECOND IN THE RACE WAS WEST GERMANY'S HARALD NORPOTH, WHOSE TIME WAS 8 MINUTES, 25.6 SECONDS.
