  • Description

PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA OF ZAMBIA PRESIDED AT SEVERAL IMPORTANT CEREMONIES THIS WEEK DURING CELEBRATIONS MARKING THE COUNTRY'S FOURTH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE. AMONG THESE WAS THE OPENING OF THE NEW INTER-CONTINENTAL HOTEL IN LUSAKA, THE HANDING OVER THE HOUSE IN CHILENJE IN WHICH THE PRESIDENT AND HIS FAMILY ONCE LIVED TO NATIONAL MONUMENTS COMMISSION AND AN INVESTITURE CEREMONY AT THE STATE HOUSE.

THE INTER-CONTINENTAL HOTEL, WHICH WAS DECLARED OPEN BY THE PRESIDENT ON TUESDAY (OCTOBER 22), IS EXPECTED TO BE A STAR ATTRACTION FOR ZAMBIA'S RAPIDLY GROWING TOURIST INDUSTRY. THE PRESIDENT TOLD A LARGE CROWD, INCLUDING MOST CABINET MINISTERS AND MEMBERS OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS, THAT LUXURY HOTELS SUCH AS THE INTER-CONTINENTAL WERE NOT A WASTE OF MONEY IN A COUNTRY LIKE ZAMBIA WHERE THE ECONOMIC POTENTIAL OF THE TOURIST INDUSTRY IS ONE OF THE HIGHEST IN THE WORLD.

THE FOLLOWING DAY, IN THE LUSAKA SUBURB OF CHILENJE, PRESIDENT KAUNDA PERFORMED A CEREMONY WHICH MUST HAVE BEEN A NOSTALGIC MOMENT FOR HIM. HE OFFICIALLY HANDED OVER TO THE NATIONAL MONUMENTS COMMISSION HOUSE NUMBER 394 - IN WHICH HE AND HIS FAMILY ONCE LIVED. THE MAYOR OF LUSAKA, MR. WHITSON BANDA, ACCOMPANIED THE PRESIDENT.

YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) AT THE STATE HOUSE IN LUSAKA, PRESIDENT KAUNDA HELD AN INVESTITURE AT WHICH HE PRESENTED HONOURS AND AWARDS TO 29 LEADING ZAMBIANS. THESE INCLUDED THE ORDER OF THE GRAND COMPANION OF FREEDOM TO THE REVEREND MICHAELI SCOTT, WHO WAS DEPORTED FROM NORTHERN RHODESIA IN 1959 FOR TAKING UP THE AFRICAN CAUSE. THE REV SCOTT RECEIVED THE ORDER FOR HIS SERVICE IN THE CAUSE OF ZAMBIA'S STRUGGLE FOR INDEPENDENCE. MR. ISRAEL MAINZA RECEIVED THE COMPANION ORDER OF FREEDOM, MR. E.S. KAPOTWE THE DECORATION OF GRAND OFFICER OF THE ORDER OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE, DIVISION TWO, FOR 37 YEARS WORK IN THE CIVIL SERVICE, AND ZAMBIAN ARMY COLONEL THOMAS ELY WAS MADE AN OFFICER IN THE ORDER OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE FOR HIS WORK IN ORGANISING THE ZAMBIAN ARMY.
