    Cambodian Government forces engaged Communist troops holding a Buddhist temple at Phsar Oudong on Friday (26 June).

    The battle took place near the arms-depot town of Longvek about 24 miles (40 kms) north of Phnom Penh. During the fighting Government aircraft bombed communist positions in the pagoda grounds. A Cambodian office said that Prime Minister Lon Nol had given permission for this first-ever bombing strike on a Buddhist temple in Cambodia.

    After the aerial attacks the troops moved forward to occupy the temple area. Official casualties in the fighting were given as 20 Communists killed for the loss of two Government soldiers. As the fighting at Phsar Oudong continued, Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces were reported poised for a mass attack on the strategic town of Kompong Speu south of Phnom Penh.

    Villagers in the area left with their possessions as soldiers moved towards the pagoda. The Temple is near the arms depot town of Longvek about 24 miles (40 kms) North of Phnom Penh. The fighting in the area continued as Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces were reported poised for a mass attack on the strategic town of Kompong Speu, South of Phnom Penh.
