  • Description

The last United States airfield in Bavaria - the airfield at Neubiberg, near Munich - was handed over to the West German Air Force.

The official ceremony included speeches by Federal Defence Minister Strauss, General Tahcher of the United States Air Force, and General Kammhuber, Federal Armed Forces.

The German unit to take over Neubiberg is the 61st Air Transport Group. The airfield will remain under NATO command - Lieutenant Colonel G. Buccholz - will be used for air transport training and, more important still, for technical officer training. These training periods run for three-year periods.

In December 1957 the United States airbases at Erding, Fuerstenfeldbruck, and Landsberg - all in Bavaria - were handed over to the Federal Armed Forces.
