    ETHIOPIAN EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE, WHO LEFT SOUTH KOREA TODAY (TUESDAY) AFTER A FOUR-DAY VISIT, ON SUNDAY (19 MAY) UNVEILED A MONUMENT AT CHUNCHON CITY, ABOUT 50 MILES (80 KMS) NORTHEAST OF SEOUL, IN COMMEMORATION OF AN ETHIOPIAN ARMY BATTALION WHICH FOUGHT IN KOREA FROM 1950 TO 1953.

    ABOUT 200 KOREANS WATCHED THE EMPEROR UNVEIL THE MAIN EPITAPH, WRITTEN IN KOREAN, AMHARIC AND ENGLISH WHILE A 21-GUN SALUTE BOOMBED.

    EMPEROR SELASSIE, WHO WAS ACCOMPANIED BY PRIME MINISTER IL-KWON CHUNG SAID IN AN IMPROMPTU SPEECH THAT THE MONUMENT WAS A SYMBOL OF PERMANENT FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN ETHIOPIA AND KOREA.

    THE WHITE CEMENT MONUMENT IS THE TALLEST AT 16 METRES (52 FEET) OF ALL WAR MEMORIAL MONUMENTS ERECTED IN KOREA BY THE UNITED NATIONS KOREAN WAR ALLIES ASSOCIATION.

    THE UNVEILING CEREMONY WAS ORIGINALLY PLANNED FOR MAY 7 TO COMMEMORATE THE ARRIVAL OF THE ETHIOPIAN BATTALION OF 1,000 OFFICERS AND MEN AT ??? PORT AS A CONTINGENT OF THE 16-COUNTRY U.N. COMMAND 17 YEARS AGO BUT IT WAS POSTPONED TO COINCIDE WITH THE VISIT OF EMPEROR SELASSIE.

    A TOTAL OF 6,200 ETHIOPIAN TROOPS WERE IN THIS EXPEDITIONARY FORCE DURING THE KOREAN WAR WITH 121 OF THEM KILLED AND 536 OTHERS WOUNDED IN ACTION.
