Background: MALAYSIA'S BIGGEST AIR DEFENCE TEST SINCE THE END OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR, WAS HELD IN SINGAPORE TODAY (SATURDAY). ALL TYPES OF FIGHTERS AND BOMBERS OF THE BRITISH AND AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCES BASED IN SINGAPORE TOOK PART. RADARS AND ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS ON THE ISLAND WERE ALSO TESTED.

THE EXERCISE WAS WITNESSED BY TOP RANKING COMMONWEALTH AND MALAYSIAN ARMED FORCES, INCLUDING TUN ABDUL RAZAK, THE MALAYSIAN DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER AND MINISTER OF DEFENCE.

THE BIG TEST WAS PART OF EXERCISE "IRON GATE" TO TEST MALAYSIA'S AIR PREPAREDNESS IN THE MOUNTING CONFLICT WITH INDONESIA.

THE AIRCRAFT WERE SPLIT INTO 'ENEMY' AND 'FRIENDLY' FORCES. THE ENEMY PLANES OPERATED AT AN ALTITUDE OF 250 FEET.

AFTER WATCHING THE EXERCISE, TUN RAZAK SAID: "MALAYSIA IS READY TO MEET ANY EVENTUALITY. MALAYSIA WILL CONTINUE TO BUILD UP HER DEFENCE AS LONG AS INDONESIA PERSISTS IN MASSING HER TROOPS ALONG THE 900-MILE BORNEO BORDER AND CONTINUES HER AGGRESSION ON MALAYSIAN SOIL."
MEANWHILE, ANOTHER AIRLIFT OF ONE THOUSAND BRITISH TROOPS INTO MALAYSIA IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED IN SIX WEEKS TIME.
